This assignment requires a detailed description of the
“formal” qualities of 1889 “Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun” painting by Vincent Van Gogh (formal as in “related to the form”) from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. In other words, you’re looking at the individual design elements,
such as composition (arrangements of parts of or in the work), color, line, texture, scale, proportion, balance, contrast, and rhythm. Attempt to explain how the artist arranges and uses these various elements.
You will need to go and look at the object for a long time and then write down what you see. A highly detailed descriptions of the art object are required. Do not assume that the readers has ever seen the work before.
Summarize the overall appearance, then describe the details of the object, moving on to a description of the materials used. Also describe things in the order in which they draw your eye around the object, starting with the first thing you notice and moving on to the next. Also include your
comment, using your own observations, what significance you think the art object has.
